Dating in Denver isn't just for hopeful singles looking to avoid a dumpster fire. This weekend, it's for the moms.

In this week's "It's a Date," we plan a Mother's Day outing for a reader who requests a weekend date to celebrate his wife. "My wife is a great mother," he says. "I'd like to take her out for a special Mother's Day without our kids because we never get to go out just by ourselves." He adds that he's been saving up for a special occasion and is willing to splurge.

Here's a sweet itinerary:

While most of this date will focus on alone time away from the children, you should probably start your Mother's Day celebration with a kid-friendly activity so that you and the kids have a chance to tell Mom how much you appreciate her. Send sweet signals at the Colorado Chocolate Festival, where moms get free chocolate cake and there will be thousands of chocolates to sample and buy. The festival also includes activities like a no-hands chocolate pudding-eating contest and chocolate bingo. Online ticket sales have ended, but more tickets will be available at the door.

Okay, ditch the kids with a sitter and check into a luxurious room at the Crawford Hotel (this is where the splurging comes in). The hotel at Union Station will give you a fun mix of Denver's past and present, where a visit to the Cooper Lounge will snag you crafted cocktails and special snacks. That's if you leave your room; you can choose from ten styles of beautifully designed accommodations.

Once you're all checked in at the Crawford and have had a cocktail or two, head down for dinner at Ultreia, where you can feast on a menu of bacon-wrapped dates, Moorish spiced ribs, tinned fish and more. For dessert, try the Manzana y Cajeta, green apple ice cream with warm spiced apples, toasted peanuts, graham crumbs and goats milk caramel.

While you might've just enjoyed a fancy dinner and plan to spend the night at an elegant hotel, go back to your roots for a mini golf date at Puttshack, where kids aren't allowed after 8 p.m. This time, you won't have to worry about tracking your scores with pen and paper, though. Puttshack golf balls track every trick shot, hazard and bonus point, so you can just focus on the fun, interactive challenges — and your date.
