National Golden Retriever Day was February 3, but the event is always scheduled on a nearby Saturday.
Washington Avenue from 10th to 14th streets was closed to traffic for three hours while a sea of "leashed and well-behaved Golden retrievers and their humans" gathered near Parfet Park at 10th and Washington Avenue for a meet and mingle of wagging tails, panting tongues, tan fur and selfies. Vendors were also on hand with free Pup Cups and other products and information to browse.
A portion of proceeds from the event will benefit the Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies and Foothills Animal Shelter, according to the city's press release for the event.
Compared to last year's snowy event, the dogs and their families — and photographer Michael Emery Hecker — enjoyed much nicer weather this year.
