Louder Than Words Dancetheatre just doesn't do things in the usual way — and its latest production, Nocturnography…of Waking and Dreaming, should be no exception. "We don't do the typical dance piece, and then the lights come up and then there's another dance," notes company production manager Whit Ryan. "It's more like an evening of entertainment: Each dancer had a dream, and each dream became a piece." What resulted is a mélange of nighttime themes — "nocturnes, nightmares, some cerebral, some gut-based," Ryan says — all executed by choreographer Chris Harris and ten other dancers.

"Most jazz-dance people say Chris's work is modern dance, and most modern-dance people say her work is jazz," Ryan explains. Indecision aside, it's all tough stuff, from the fierce and visceral Elixir Vitae to the furiously kinetic four-minute EpEk. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. tonight and tomorrow at the Denver School of the Arts, 7111 Montview Boulevard; for tickets, $12 to $15, call 720-261-7936.
Sat., Sept. 30, 7:30 p.m.; Oct. 6-7, 7:30 p.m.
