Unlike video games, which are generally considered to be a solo affair, board games require players to come together. This sense of community is the driving force behind Genghis Con, a twice-yearly convention that attracts players of all shapes, factions and backgrounds for an epic weekend of gaming, conversing and sharing ideas.

The schedule includes over 200 different gaming events — role-playing, card, war and miniature games, as well as obscure board games that even hard-core fans may have never heard of — along with vendors, speakers, classes and a special room devoted to gamers ages seven to twelve. Despite the overwhelming offerings, says convention director Leif Olsen, “it’s still easy for people to pop in, see what’s going on and jump into a game.”

Genghis Con XXXII starts at 6 p.m. today and runs through Sunday at the Red Lion Hotel at 3200 South Parker Road in Aurora. Tickets range from $5 to $33 depending on the event; there are also fees for individual tournaments and classes.
