A generation of comedy nerds has grown up with Mystery Science Theater and DVD commentaries for their favorite films, so it makes sense that a live version of the same would become wildly popular decades later. And there’s probably no one better than Doug Benson — host of Doug Loves Movies and The Benson Interruption — to lead the charge. Having teamed up with the Alamo Drafthouse for a nationwide series, Benson will bring his cinematic humor to Denver for some good-natured ribbing of buddy-cop film Lethal Weapon.

“We all have a commentary in our own heads when we watch a film we like to make fun of, even if it’s a beloved film,” says Keith Garcia, creative manager at the Littleton Alamo. “Doug Benson has been one of the first comics in the country to see the fun that comes from a really good interruption of a classic film. He’s an avid movie watcher, so he understands pop culture and the tropes that these films fall into. He doesn’t decimate the film, but he does find the comedy hidden within.”

Doug Benson’s The Movie Interruption begins tonight at 7 p.m. at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, 7301 South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton. Tickets are $20; for more information, visit drafthouse.com/denver.
