Strange but true: Somehow, in our little town, there were two separate collectives — Misassembly and Laser Party — making film-poster art in Denver. “We are essentially two factions of artists and friends who didn’t know we were all doing the same thing,” explains Misassembly’s Daniel Crosier. But now that they’ve found each other, he adds, the collectives are banding together to market their work: “We started doing art prints to offer at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema screenings. And now that we have a larger catalogue of art, we’re starting off the year with a show.”

A whole collection of limited-edition posters hyping every sort of movie, from It’s a Wonderful Life to kung fu classics, will be on display at tonight’s Misassembly & Laser Party First Friday, a joint exhibition and sale starting at 7 p.m. at Wazee Union, 3501 Wazee Street.

Crosier hopes the party will become an ongoing event. “Misassembly will be printing images on maple veneer, so they’ll be a unique, one-of-a-kind item,” Crosier says. “And Laser Party is doing similar stuff, only movie-poster-sized — mostly for series.”

Can’t make it tonight? The collectives will also double up in the lobby of the Alamo, 7301 South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton, on the evening of January 7 for a First Wednesday Gallery Night during Genre Night, when a screening of the 1981 kung fu treat My Young Auntie is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. First Friday admission is free; tix to see the film at the Alamo are $7 at drafthouse.com/denver.
