Meow Wolf has targeted New York City as the future home of its seventh permanent exhibition, the immersive art conglomerate announced Monday, March 10, during South by Southwest when self-proclaimed rat king of the undermaulers Plotzo crashed an SXSW panel to deliver the news. The exhibition will open at Pier 17 at the Seaport; the theme, opening date and more details are still to come.

Meow Wolf opened its first location, The House of Eternal Return, in 2016 in Santa Fe and has since expanded to Las Vegas with Omega Mart; Denver with Convergence Station; Grapevine, Texas, with The Real Unreal; and Houston with Radio Tave. Last year, Meow Wolf announced a sixth location in Los Angeles, which is set to open in 2026.

The announcement comes only a few months after the December news that Meow Wolf would be laying off 20 percent of its central workforce —75 roles total, with six of those jobs in Denver. Prior to that, Meow Wolf laid off 165 employees (fifty of them in Denver) last April.

"The past year has been transformative for Meow Wolf as we, like many in the creative economy, navigate shifting financial realities and evolving priorities," Meow Wolf Vice President of Public Relations and Communications Kati Murphy said in a statement to Westword last year. "These challenges have required us to reassess our business needs and ensure our ability to deliver exceptional creative experiences."

New York is the perfect place for Meow Wolf's East Coast debut due to its historical reputation as "a hub for creative invention," according to company officials. "The energy of New York City is unlike anywhere else," Meow Wolf CEO Jose Tolosa says in a statement announcing the news. "This city has given the world so much groundbreaking art and culture."

Meow Wolf works with local artists to create each of its exhibitions and says that Meow Wolf New York will be "a love letter to the stories, people and artistic spirit that make the city an unmatched cultural powerhouse."
