When the Red Ball fashion show started out in 2009, it was a much smaller affair, recalls Jeff Trujillo of the Denver branch of the Colorado AIDS Project. But its intent remains the same. “This year’s show, being the fifth anniversary, happens to fall on World AIDS Day,” he notes. “That’s going to play a bigger role in this year’s event, with a number of different elements, and we’re really driving home the fact that we are raising awareness about the disease in our community and raising funds for the Denver Colorado AIDS Project.” The ball has also grown exponentially, and will bring twenty designers, stylists from sixteen salons and more than 120 models to the runway for the local fashion showcase, all inspired by the provocative color of the AIDS awareness ribbon.

“The color red is used on every model of every segment in some way, whether it’s red fabrics, hair, makeup or accessories,” Trujillo adds. “This unifies the show from segment to segment, and reminds people that we are there for a specific cause.”

Now DCAP’s biggest fundraiser of the year (and the second largest in the state, after the Colorado AIDS Walk), the Red Ball begins at 8 p.m. tonight at the EXDO Event Center, 1399 35th Street, which is graciously donating the space. A silent auction, aerial and fire dancers, and spins by DJ Rockstar Aaron are included in the ticket price, which ranges from $30 to $75. Visit redballdenver.org for reservations and information.
