The Denver Art Museum wants you for the Open for Design challenge

A few years ago, there was a lovely temporary museum in town -- Jaime Kopke's Denver Community Museum -- that existed only to engage the community in the act and gestalt of art-making, rather than the usual staring at something hung on the wall of a gallery. That long-gone museum's spirit is written all over a new project at the Denver Art Museum, and Kopke has a hand in it: Open for Design: A DAM Community Challenge will give the public a chance to be part of a museum display that opens on August 4 for a month in the Hamilton Building's second-floor Anschutz Gallery.

Here's the challenge: Create a solution to a design issue in your neighborhood. Submissions can be an object, a model, a sketch or a photograph, flat or 3-D, that can fit into a two-foot-square space.

"I've already heard some pretty exciting ideas: a plastic water bottle found in the park can be transformed into a birdfeeder or a plan to attach a blender to a stationary bike so neighbors can 'pedal' snow cones on summer days," says the DAM's Sonnet Coggins. The possibilities are endless, considering how many materials are just waiting to be repurposed.

Participants can drop off their finished designs at the museum from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 28 only. Get a list of materials restrictions, along with project examples and ideas, and register your submission at the Open for Design website.

What will you come up with? And what are you waiting for?
