The Old Song and Dance

The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical In the Heights works on the simplest of levels: Great music, dancing to match, and an uncomplicated story that follows likably human characters through three days of life in New York City’s Dominican haven of Washington Heights. It all adds up to a classic show and a great time, the stuff of working-class hopes and dreams tipped with a hot swatch of salsa, hip-hop and meringue rhythms. What’s not to like?

Put a little color in your life: Lose yourself to the street corners and bodegas of the Heights beginning at 8 p.m. tonight when the national tour stops over for a run in the Buell Theatre, Denver Performing Arts Complex. Performances continue daily except Mondays through May 9. Admission ranges from $15 to $125; get tickets and information at www.denvercenter.org or call 303-893-4100.
Tuesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Thu., April 29, 2 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 & 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 & 7:30 p.m. Starts: April 28. Continues through May 9, 2010

KEEP WESTWORD FREE... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we'd like to keep it that way. With local media under siege, it's more important than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" program, allowing us to keep offering readers access to our incisive coverage of local news, food and culture with no paywalls.
Susan Froyd started writing for Westword as the "Thrills" editor in 1992 and never quite left the fold. These days she still freelances for the paper in addition to walking her dogs, enjoying cheap ethnic food and reading voraciously. Sometimes she writes poetry.
