It’s one of the great ironies of the online social-networking era that our new tools — Twitter, Facebook and whatever app the cool kids are using on any given day — can end up isolating us even further. With the Denver incarnation of Twestival, McGillem hopes to put an end to that isolation — in this town, at least. “Twestival started in 2009 as a global fundraising day that now takes place in over 200 cities around the world, using social media to connect with the local community and raise money for charity,” she explains.
The Denver Twestival tweet-up starts at 7 p.m. tonight at Green Spaces, 1368 26th Street, and will help raise money for Earth Force and its Denver Youth Engagement Zone project. “One of our goals is to get people to come out and explore some different levels of engagement and learn how to better use some of these wonderful social-networking tools,” McGillem says. And although using Twitter is key to that goal, she also plans to use a much more reliable social-networking tool to help bring people out for the event: “Breckenridge Brewery is donating four kegs of beer.”
