Ten Terrible Policies United Airlines Could Also Defend

This past weekend, United Airlines cited a totally not-made-up ban on spandex and refused to let two young girls board flight in Denver because they were wearing leggings. (Sorry, Spider-Man. Put on some freaking slacks.) Then it doubled-down on the decision, somehow connecting it to the fact that the young ladies were flying as “pass travelers,” meaning they were there as guests of employees and had to adhere to the no-spandex policy. This public relations incompetence rivals that of Sean Spicer.

For those who require discretion, functionality and style, we give you the VaePlume, an actual vape pen. The design allows users to unscrew the top, insert a cartridge of their choice and then smoke out of the top of the pen, while the bottom is a functional writing instrument.

Bill Could Bring Much-Needed Mental-Health Support to Child-Welfare Caseworkers

A bill makings its way through the Colorado Legislature would create a task force to support child-welfare caseworkers in Colorado — especially in the area of mental health. Caseworkers face numerous challenges in their work, and child-welfare departments see high rates of burnout and turnover. Nationwide, most caseworkers don’t stay on the job more…

More Awful Options for Denver Neighborhood Acronyms

Developers are getting manic about renaming parts of our booming city, sometimes for easy reference, sometimes to boost property values. Recently, RiNo leaders were startled by a proposal to give Brighton Boulevard a shiny new moniker that will reflect its status as a gateway to the city; they’re still trying to put the brakes on that.

Denver: “Nothing Changes” After Jeff Sessions Comments on Sanctuary Cities

President Donald Trump has been threatening to pull federal funding from cities that aren’t participating in federal immigration enforcement — otherwise known as sanctuary cities — ever since he issued a January 25 executive order on immigration. On Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions doubled down on that threat at a press conference…

Why Colorado Tokers Love Grapefruit Durban

Grapefruit Durban is bred from Grapefruit and Durban Poison strains — two of my favorite sativas, thanks to the instant energy they bring. Grapefruit, bred from Cinderella 99 and an unknown auto-flowering sativa, is beloved for its heavy citrus, tropical aromas and relatively easy growing process. Durban Poison, a landrace sativa I write about often, is one of Colorado’s most popular, with a sweet, skunky flavor and intense head high.

Name Game: Here’s the Lowdown on the LoDo Nickname

Denver is suddenly awash in nicknames. Developers are smacking hip labels on formerly unhip areas of town; the creators of South Park are smacking those developers with mocking SoDoSoPa mockeries. The city is drowning in an alphabet soup.Denver has always had nicknames — Mile High City, Queen City of the Plains — but the first neighborhood nickname to really stick was LoDo.

Reefer Madness Reference Lights Up Social Consumption Advisory Meeting

If you want to keep a marijuana meeting going smoothly, don’t mention “reefer madness.” The second-to-last meeting of Denver’s Social Consumption Advisory Committee took an interesting turn on March 24 when Dan Landes, owner of City, O’City and the soon-to-reopen Campus Lounge, and the group’s business representative, used that term — and offended some members of the committee.

Eight Shootings Near RiNo in Two Weeks, Gang Violence Rising?

As many as eight possibly gang-related shootings have taken place near the booming RiNo area over the past two weeks or so according to Mark Ungar, president of the Whittier Neighborhood Association, including a thus-far-unsolved broad daylight gun-down near 31st and Gilpin earlier this month that resulted in serious injuries for two men.

Places Besides Cherry Creek Mall That Could Start Charging for Parking

After the success (meaning: lack of violent uprising) that was Denver’s response to Cherry Creek Mall charging an hourly rate for parking, the newest entity to embrace the idea is Boulder’s Chautauqua Park. The plan, which Boulder is hoping to pilot this summer, would charge drivers $2.50 an hour (which is reportedly double the rate for parking in the rest of the city of Boulder) to park not just in the lot at the main trailhead, but along Baseline Road and even in the surrounding residential neighborhood.

Have You Heard? RiNo Is Hip.

The River North neighborhood is hip. So hip that even its abbreviation, RiNo, is cool. But there’s a lot more to this neighborhood than hipsters, bustling restaurants and cool street art. Keep reading for seven stories about RiNo (including one that challenges that very nickname). 1. Welcome to Denver’s Hottest…
