During college, I studied in Spain for a semester and then backpacked through Europe for a month with a ragtag group of ramblers from the university I’d attended. The trip included a lot of walking, train riding, museum/church exploring and experiencing the different cultures of Europe (e.g., drinking wine in bars). Unfortunately, few European bars had thought to group together small samples of wine, and so the five of us spent considerable time arguing about which bottle we’d share. Crú, the gorgeously appointed new wine bar on Larimer Square, would have quickly ended such discussions, because it offers wine flights that are the oenophile’s equivalent of KBCO’s My Three Songs. In memory of my college days, I ordered Flight #11, Backpacking Through Europe. Described as “a great opportunity to taste and enjoy the characteristics and profiles of varietals from regions around Europe where they are exceptionally grown and produced,” it was indeed a grand tour, with two-ounce glasses of Abadia Retuerta Rivola (Spain) ’04, Domaine la Bastide Vin de Pays D’Hauterive (France) ’03 and Pintia Toro (Spain) ’02. While these reds had a little too much bite for me, I managed to enjoy all six ounces. Have a nice trip.
