Last week, the Colorado Restaurant Association was looking for a restaurateur to run for the District 1 Denver City Council seat that Rick Garcia is leaving empty (he’s been named the regional director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).
Enter John Haney, who owns Haney’s Coffee Shop, at 3814 Lowell Boulevard, with his wife, Kathy. Yesterday, Haney announced that he’s running for council, giving the race a restaurateur.
But that’s not all: Haney is also a Denver police detective.
Haney was born and raised in north Denver, one of eleven children. Three of his brothers are also police officers.

A special, all-mail ballot election will be held on May 4 to choose Garcia’s replacement. It could be a hot contest; Paula Sandoval has already thrown her hat in the ring, and other candidates are certain to emerge.
So far, though, Haney is the only one who has a restaurant credential. And he’s certain to be the only candidate to have both a coffee shop and a cop’s badge.
