When it opened in 2006 as a low-maintenance, LoHi watering hole at 3400 Navajo Street, the Highland Tavern quickly became a hangout with a large fan base of regulars, some from the neighborhood, some who came in with their scooter clubs or kickball teams for beers and bloodies. The Tavern kicked things up a notch when it opened its kitchen in 2009, upping the ante on pub grub around town with great burgers and homemade tater tots; brunch regularly attracts a line out the door. And now Highland Tavern is on tap to complete a major renovation that has nearly doubled the size of the place; to put on the last finishing touches, the place closed this past Saturday. “Sorry for the inconvenience,” the restaurant says on its website, “but we’ve been working on some amazing renovations for the last six to nine months! Please come see us when we’ve gotten a facelift.”
Which is scheduled to be completed on Friday, February 13 — just in time to hit a very sweet spot on Valentine’s Day brunch.
