A new barbecue joint named Johnie’s has opened at 5280 West 25th Avenue in Edgewater, in the space that recently held the short-lived Tiki Torch and, before that, the Okoboji Inn, where the broasted chicken was a bird that flew right.

But Johnie’s joins a busy little block of feed bags that still includes the venerable Edgewater Inn (5302 West 25th Avenue), U.S. Thai (5228 West 25th Avenue) and Sloan’s Bar & Grille (5850 West 25th Avenue).

I dropped in over the weekend after killing myself with curry at U.S. Thai to check out the digs and menu, and found a few stragglers at the bar and a straightforward roster of ‘que: ribs and rib tips; pulled pork and chicken; brisket and hot links; turkey legs (!) and sides of baked beans, coleslaw, corn, potato salad and sweet potato fries.

Johnie’s is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., which should come as good news to those of you looking for something other than tacos to soak up that late-night liquid.
