The Lancer Lounge at 233 Seventh Avenue is one of this town’s great dives, a spot where you can always count on a collegial evening of drinking, as Drew Bixby recently reported in Drunk of the Week.

What you can’t count on is finding food there. The most recent tenant of the Lancer’s kitchen, Sweet Baby Anna’s, has moved on, the latest in a long series of operators. Our personal favorite was a combo Salvadoran/Japanese outfit, which had a brief run at the Lancer a dozen years ago.

No telling what the Lancer will cook up next. But in the meantime, there are plenty of other eating options in the neighborhood — from the downhome Benny’s and Govnr’s Park to Lala’s Wine Bar & Pizzeria, Luca D’Italia, Mizuna and soon Bones, Frank Bonanno’s noodle house that’s opening right next door at 301 East Seventh.
