$20,000

A few weeks back, we asked readers where we should take Gustavo Arellano of Ask a Mexican fame during his visit to Denver, so that he could try a real Colorado Mexican eatery. One suggestion was for a spot we’d never heard of: Las Tortas, a torta joint at 5307 Leetsdale Drive that has apparently been getting rave reviews on other internet sites.

The tipster, who went by the name of Anna, raved that the Mexican sandwiches are “just like they sell in Guadalajara, including the Tortas Ahogadas (smothered sandwiches).”

While we haven’t yet had the opportunity to sample those tortas, we did confirm that Las Tortas opened about four months ago and is owned by Guillermo Campillo and Tymen Shroeder, who also own Rincon Del Sol in Boulder. Las Tortas is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner tortas — all tortas all the time. The spot is about to get its beer license, too, at which point the owners plan to extend their hours. For more infomation, call 720-379-7269.
