Well… that didn’t take long.
For those of you dismayed over the sudden closure of Leven Supply on February 17 after the State of Colorado seized the Washington Park spot over unpaid taxes — or perhaps hoping to score some equipment and supplies in a potential auction to cover the debt — this chapter appears to have come to a rapid end.
According to owner Anthony Lygizos, Leven Supply will reopen its doors tomorrow.
“We are thrilled to share that we are reopening Leven Supply tomorrow, February 20,” reads a Leven statement issued February 19. “We are so grateful for the understanding and support from our community and can’t wait to welcome everyone back in.”
That will come as a big relief to the Leven Supply faithful, some of whom were shocked to find the note on the shuttered doors this week.
“What happened?” exclaimed one elderly woman as she pulled up in her car.
“I guess I’m not getting a sandwich,” said a younger man, looking a little at a loss.
The public notice taped to the glass doors listed unpaid taxes in excess of $140,000 dating back to March of last year, including sales taxes, business license taxes, and wage withholding taxes. The Leven Supply team was quick to clarify that while employees had been paid their employees, the wage tax wasn’t submitted to the state.
According Lygizos, the situation was caused by a “third-party accounting contractor mishandling Leven Supply’s sales tax filings and payments.” The company, which also owns Leven Deli in the Golden Triangle area and the soon-to-debut Leven Downtown full-service restaurant, was trying to work out a solution to the debt, he said. But it clearly wasn’t working fast enough to keep the state from taking the dramatic action of seizing the property.
In all, Leven Supply has lost three days of business due to the closure. According to Lygizos, all employees were paid through the days when the place was shuttered.
“Our team is our top priority,” he told Westword, “and they have been paid during the days we were temporarily closed.”
Leven Supply is located at 300 East Alameda Avenue, and will be back open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. For more information, visit eatleven.com/supply.
