Food to go: Transalpin has not only shut its doors, it’s been locked down by the taxman. A decade ago, Robert Tournier–the man also responsible for bringing us Le Central–introduced tapas to Denver at Transalpin, his once chi-chi spot on Seventh Avenue. (Arguably, Transalpin was also the first spot in the city to cover tables with butcher paper and provide diners with crayons.) Tournier sold the place long ago, however, and this month it finally gave up the ghost–apparently with a little prodding from the revenue department, judging from the note on the door.
Also beating a hasty exit are the folks who owned Vietnamna, at 1600 California Street. A dispute over increased rent closed the door on this decent Vietnamese restaurant–badly needed in that part of downtown.
Tandoor mercies: Man does not live by naan alone. On Thursday, August 29, the excellent Indian restaurant MijBani (see review this page) kicks off its ten-day “Taste of India.” Each day, owner/chef Jessica Shah will offer specialities–in both cuisine and culture–from her native country. For example, this weekend the featured food is a “wedding-feast-style” menu (fifteen-item thali platters), served to the accompaniment of live sitar music (Friday) and live vocal and tabla music (Saturday). Tuesday, the kitchen cooks up special breads, while Shah offers a free cooking class on “Quick and Easy Vegetable Dishes.” On Thursday, September 5, the special dessert menu is paired with a free cooking class featuring dessert recipes. Don’t miss it–or you’ll be sari. For a complete schedule, call 442-7000.
