While another reader’s suggestion focuses on falafel, it’s useful for many kinds of food. Says Scott:
Simple rule to follow, if it’s full of hipsters, probably not the real deal. If it is full people of the related ethnic group, give it a go. We have plenty of good ethnic food, you just need to get out of your safe little neighborhoods.
