A sign on the door at Moontower Tacos reads simply “Closed. Thanks for 2.5 good years.” Owner Brent Thrash and his crew gave a valiant effort in their attempt to bring Austin-style tacos to the corner of Sixth Avenue and Grant Street, but now we’ll have to look elsewhere for our fix of migas tacos or the chicken-and-waffle behemoth known as the Doggfather.
This comes as Texas tacos are poised to flood the Denver market in a big way: Another Austin street-food specialist, Torchy’s Tacos, is scheduled to open on Broadway in a former Arby’s later this year, with plans for as many as a dozen other locations along the Front Range in the next few years. Dallas purveyor Rusty Taco set up shop in Aurora last year and Fort Worth’s Fuzzy’s Taco Shop already operates three metro-area joints.
Are you buying what Texas is selling when it comes to tacos, or do you prefer our Den-Mex version? Let us know in the comments section below where you get your street-taco fix.
Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $23,250 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
