Just as the “Kitchen Now Open” sign says, the long-awaited kitchen is now open in the Highland Tavern, 3400 Navajo Street. It’s serving all the usual suspects…and some not-so-usual Slavic specials: beef shank pierogies, spaetlze and bacon. If you’re looking for more traditional pub fare, try the cheese Tots or the Stupid Burger, a ridiculously large double patty with bacon, egg and cheese served with chili fries. For non beef-eaters, there are also several salads and soups, as well as a pull-the-plug-if-imma veggie sandwich. And almost everything costs less than ten bucks.
But the best thing about the Highland Tavern kitchen could be the hours. The late-night menu — served from 10 p.m. to midnight on the weekdays and 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday — will save you from having to make a run to Village Inn. You can belly right up to the bar for a waffle, bacon and fried egg combo that will either satiate any late-night munchies or serve as an early breakfast. Or hit up some little fatties (aka sliders), griddled cheese or a pound of wings with your choice of hot sauce: Frank’s hot, effing hot, and BBQ.
