The Cruise Room

Friday, December 5, marks Repeal Day — it’s now been 92 years since Prohibition officially ended on December 5, 1933. While there are several options if you’re looking for historic spots to celebrate this august occasion, one bar is offering a cocktail deal that’s a hell of a steal.
The Cruise Room, which is located inside the Oxford Hotel near Union Station, famously opened the day Prohibition ended in 1933. To mark the occasion, it’s throwing a glitzy party, and the evening will kick off with drinks for less than two quarters.
From 4 to 5 p.m., guests can score their first drink for just 35 cents thanks to a partnership with Heaven Hill. There will also be live jazz in the Oxford Hotel lobby from 5 to 7 p.m.
After that, the revelry continues with burlesque entertainment from 7 to 9 p.m. and a Great Gatsby-inspired costume party from 9 p.m. to close. The festivities are open to anyone over 21.

The Cruise Room
The History of the Cruise Room
As Prohibition ended, this bar inside the circa 1891 Oxford Hotel was designed to look like the observation lounge on the Queen Mary (hence the name) by the man who designed the original, Gilbert Charles Jaka.
A decade later, it got a quick remodel when the frieze with Hitler’s face – one of a dozen international toasts designed by artist Alley Henson circling the walls – was deemed politically incorrect and removed. Stalin went, too.
In the 1960s, the bar became the headquarters for a group of carousers known as the Evil Companions; in the ’90s, it was discovered by hipsters. Today, the Cruise Room is run by Sage Hospitality, which owns the Oxford, and you’ll find all kinds of passengers hopping aboard bar stools to bask in the red light glowing from under the bar and down classic martinis.
The Cruise Room is located at 1600 17th Street and is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday, 5 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit theoxfordhotel.com/eat-drink/the-cruise-room.
