The show must go on: City Park had a shocking loss on March 26 when it announced that its bandstand was burned down, but the popular concert series City Park Jazz will still take place this summer.
City Park Jazz announced the news about the nearly 100-year-old bandstand on social media, declaring it a “total loss.”
“Last night around 2:30 am, the bandstand at City Park was destroyed in a fire. Denver Police and Fire Departments are still on scene and an investigation is underway,” the post reads. “What we do know as of right now is that the structure — originally built back in 1929 — is a total loss. But that doesn’t mean our 40th Anniversary season is.”
DFD operations chief Ryan Murphy told Westword that when the Fire Department arrived, “the structure was fully engulfed.” An investigation has been opened, and Murphy said the damage is confined to the bandstand.
City Park Jazz is confident that the concert series won’t be affected. “We have a great team in place for this,” the post reads. “We’re evaluating our options for mobile stage set ups, power needs, and how we’ll adjust our footprint in City Park accordingly.” The nonprofit is accepting donations for the additional costs.
Meanwhile, the series took the opportunity to announce its fortieth-anniversary lineup, which will take place each Sunday starting in June until August 9. The slate includes old favorites like Hazel Miller & the Collective and the Brass Band Extravaganza with Bourbon Brass Band and Badda Boom Brass Band, as well as DJ Williams Band.
