Last month in this space, Zachary “Status” Young was lauded for the inventive production heard on his new CD, Things to Do in Denver When You’re Def…The same compliment is applicable to Thru My Eyez, which Status produced and helped mix. But equal praise should be offered to Azma Holiday, whose rapping and rhymes are just as strong as the sounds that encase them.
Azma digs beneath the surface of street life during “System on Top,” an attack on societal injustices, and “Problemz,” which juxtaposes Notorious references with observations such as “We so caught up in the okey-doke/That we can’t see the smoke/And don’t believe in the truth.” In comparison, the likes of “Bad MuthaF…” and “4 My Dogz” are, to put it mildly, less thematically unexpected. Still, they work, thanks to Azma’s impassioned yet controlled delivery and the consistently imaginative backing tracks that support them.
As Eyez confirms, both Azma and Status are on the rise.
