Dubstep producer/DJ NumberNin6 (aka Nishant Parikh) came to the style by way of trance. That's an unusual progression — dubstep's roots in drum and bass are about as far from trance as can be imagined — but he manages to make it work to his advantage. Occasionally, wisps of trancey pads crop up momentarily to waft across the hard, buzzing soundscapes and gut-womping bass tones, and it sets things off nicely. That's not to say his work is fluffy in any way; most of it is closer to the metallic timbres and clanging beats of acts like Front 242 and Meat Beat Manifesto than BT or Ferry Corsten's work. In his short career, Nin6 has managed to catch the ear of top dubstep acts such as Bassnectar and Skream and produce one bona fide smash in his remix of Prodigy's "Breathe," but the best is clearly yet to come. Catch him Saturday, November 7, at the Root, 1844 55th Street in Boulder.
