First meeting at college in Virginia, the members of Driftwood Fire, Lynn Scharf and Charlotte Formichella, took a small piece of Appalachia with them when they relocated to Fort Collins. There’s plenty of folk pop on the band’s excellent long-player How to Untangle a Heartache, the followup to 2008’s self-titled EP, as well as some backwoods Americana and country sprinkled throughout the disc. And while there’s variety, the songs are tied together by Scharf’s riveting vocals, which recall Sarah McLachlan at times. Whether the act is running through the lively mid-tempo pop of “Small City Lights” or offering up somber backwoods folk on tunes like “Appalachian Hills,” How to Untangle a Heartache deserves repeated listens.
