Remember the halcyon days of the Colorado drum-and-bass scene, when DNB nights were plentiful, frequently rivaling trance as the top draw?
These days dubstep, a slower, more spacious evolution of drum and bass's frenetic sci-fi breakbeat sound, is siphoning off most of the love that used to get thrown to DNB nights, not to mention the DJs and producers. And electro has co-opted some of the brash timbres and raw bass sound that characterized the style and packaged it into easier-to-swallow, noob-friendly house tracks.
But that doesn't mean DNB is dead, not with acts like the Smash Bros. doing their damnedest to keep the flame alive.
The duo of Graham Wincott (aka Sharpshooter) and Ray Alston (aka Xplicit) started working together under the Smash Bros moniker out of a shared appreciation for drum and bass and a desire to not see it disappear from the scene.
Listening to the duo's latest promo mix, Smash Bros. 4, will make you wonder why it ever fell out of favor. It's a bouncy, head-bobbing mix full of dense, barely controlled musical chaos -- whiplash breaks, fierce bass and dirty synth timbres, topped off with the occasional dash of hip-hop and mixed to perfection.
You can listen and download it for free at the the Smash Bros. SoundCloud page, or via the embedded player below. If you like what you hear, check out their free weekly drum and bass night at Sutra (1109 Lincoln Street) called Here Comes Thursday.
