How to explain Heyoka? Well, it’s like you jumped in your time-traveling Delorean for a trip to the future, only to discover that alien overlords rule the Earth. But you don’t despair, because they are totally cool and chilled-out overlords who brought lots of great, trippy alien drugs that make you see pretty colors and alternate planes of existence and stuff like that but don’t cause hangovers or bad trips. Oh, and the aliens love hip-hop and want everyone to dance, so they play this crazy, off-the-wall, mind-bending breakbeat music full of gurgling zaps and chittering, inhuman vocalizations. But the beat is good, and you can definitely swing to it, and it sounds great on all those imported alien hallucinogens, so it’s got that going for it. Yeah, that’s pretty much what Heyoka sounds like. And he’s playing the Beatport Lounge at Beta on Friday, February 26 — alien drugs not included.
