With enough sex appeal to make even John Waters salivate, Phoenix’s Les Hell on Heels secured an unprecedented three-record deal on Bomp! Records, one of the nation’s oldest surviving indie labels (it was founded in 1974 by the late Greg Shaw). The band’s self-titled debut, engineered by Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney), features catchy but calculated tunes about seduction, debauchery and making bad boys cry. Even so, the four stilettoed spitfires transcend novelty with an impressive mastery of primal punk rock and pop harmonies. Fronted by guitarist Paula Monarch, who helmed the Peeps with bassist Chela LaRue, the Heels are rounded out by guitarist Katie Rose (Tempe Tramps) and drummer Jessica Roe (replacing Kristin Machynski, who’s having a baby). Recalling femme-centric acts like the Runaways, early Go-Go’s and Bratmobile, the stalkable foursome has been gaining momentum nationally, including rotation on the weekly syndicated Little Steven’s Underground Garage. This mid-week sex clinic at the Larimer Lounge, which is followed by a video after-party presented by Burton snowboards, should prove conclusively why hell hath no fury like a hottie scorned.
