Avant guitarist Todd Ayers has been a catalyst for some of the best and most compelling music to ever come out of Denver. He’s performed with and engineered an array of artists, including Twice Wilted, Volplane, Space Team Electra, the Emmas, Worm Trouble and the Tarmints. These days, Ayers splits his time between twisting knobs at Immersive Studios and playing guitar in his latest project, Sonnenblume (due Thursday, October 5, at the hi-dive). Is the act a drone-y space-rock band? Of course! You can expect nothing less from Ayers. Sonnenblume’s powerfully evocative material takes listeners on a dark yet soothing journey; not only is the music hypnotic and drifty, but it spirals forward like tendrils of electrical sparks and flames. Seldom does ethereal music like this have a foundation of such insistent intensity.
