The Finnish city of Helsinki is one of extremes, where daylight lingers for nineteen hours during the summer yet is present for a mere six at the winter solstice. It's the kind of place that might embrace a sunny, open approach to music at one moment while delving into the darkest, creepiest corners of sound the next. In other words, it's the kind of place necessary to birth a talent such as Tes La Rok. The Finnish dubstep producer/DJ is capable of dropping a sun-drenched take on the style that sounds like reggae gone club-friendly and broken beat one second, then twisting it into a disturbing, dubbed-out trip into sonic paranoia and audio madness just minutes later. His distinctive take on the style has been featured in mixes such as Steppa's Delight and Laurent Garnier's Mixmag 25-year anniversary disc, but you can hear it for yourself on Friday, January 29, when Tes La Rok comes to Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom as part of his first U.S. tour.
