Though Joe Preston is better known for his tenures in the Melvins, Earth and High on Fire, his most musically interesting venture is perhaps his solo project, Thrones. With this act, Preston is free to let his imagination roam free, and the variety of his recorded output under this name bears witness to his wealth of creativity. Often present is his signature, gritty bass guitar sound, used in the context of music that sets moods and creates landscapes fraught with peril and inspiration. It's tempting to compare Thrones to Trans Am without the kraut/prog-rock sound because of the use of electronic music augmenting epic, doomy rock exercises. When it comes to ambitious one-man bands, Joe Preston is the king.
