Making its second stop in Colorado in the last year, Broken Water (playing tonight at Rhinoceropolis with Gem Trails and MJOLNIIRDXP) is a trio that seems born to blow minds. Based out of Olympia, Washington, the group has been playing together for a little less than three years but has created plenty of buzz.
With heavy, sludgy jams that recall My Bloody Valentine and the trio of Jon Hanna, Abigail Ingram and Kanako Wynkoop trading vocals between the waves of distorted guitar, Broken Water creates a haunting effect similar to the one that makes Sonic Youth so infinitely listenable.
Along with visual projections provided by artist, musician and former Rhino resident Milton Melvin Croissant III, the Broken Water show tonight is not to be missed — in fact, it kind of feels like this could be one of those legendary nights where you get to catch a great band before they move on and get huge. This show is all-ages, and donations for touring bands are accepted at the door. Doors open at 9 p.m., and the show begins shortly after.
