tUnE-yArDs (playing tonight at the hi-dive with Buke & Gass and Papa Bear) is the off-kilter moniker of Merrill Garbus, a multi-instrumentalist whose voice is her biggest asset. Although the songstress is often backed by live percussion and strings, she plays the ukulele and the drums while simultaneously creating beats and harmonies using live loops of her own vocal lines.
This year’s release, w h o k i l l, finds Garbus again doing most of the musical laboring herself, working in African rhythyms with her own beautiful and almost-androgynous croon. This show is eighteen and up, and tickets are $10-$13. Doors open at 8 p.m., and performances start at 9.
