Georgia’s own We Versus the Shark, joined by P-Nuckle, the Supervillains and Apex Vibe, is akin to a demolition derby: Lots of stuff crashes together on a regular basis, but the mayhem’s generally pretty entertaining. On EP of Bees EP, a clumsily named 2007 release, tracks such as “I Am a Fantastic Battle” and “The Lament of Sue Richards” explode with energy thanks to the colliding guitars of Luke Douglas Fields and Samantha Erin Paulsen, crazed caterwauling by Paulsen and bassist/vocalist Jeffrey Daniel Tobias, and Scott Philip Smith’s frantic drumming, which sounds like a toolbox falling down several flights of stairs — but in a good way. Indeed, the band works best when bringing the noise, a conclusion confirmed by the final cut, “(After)life Things,” which slows things down during a comparatively tedious intro before the players mash the gas pedal into the floorboards once more. And when this Shark gets going, buckle up.
