The number of COVID-19 outbreaks at chain outlets as calculated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has taken a notable jump in recent weeks. That's especially true for one of the country's biggest retailers, Walmart, whose outbreak total has nearly tripled, and the largest grocery company operating in the state, Kroger, owner of King Soopers and City Market brands, which added almost a dozen more sites in less than a month.

The ten chains (actually eleven, owing to a tie) with the most outbreaks in Colorado include one regional enterprise, American Furniture Warehouse, as well as four well-known fast-food purveyors and an assortment of giant box stores, many in the metro area, that have proven particularly susceptible to the novel coronavirus.

The CDPHE considers an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location are confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period are paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis. The vast majority of businesses and facilities identified as outbreaks remain open while working with the state health department to monitor symptoms and prevent future infections.

Since we published our first roundup of chains with the most outbreaks on November 10, there's been no change in the names on that list — though the rankings have shifted considerably, and the number of cases at some stores have skyrocketed. Last month, for example, the Target Distribution Center in Pueblo registered four positive staff cases and one probable staff case. As of the most recent CDPHE outbreaks report, released on December 2, the center had 51 positive staff cases and 6 probable staff cases.

Of the corporations on this list, only American Furniture Warehouse saw no new outbreaks among its Colorado locations, while the fast-food restaurants, paced by Chick-Fil-A's ten outbreaks, saw small bumps. But totals swelled by four for Home Depot, six for Target, a stunning thirteen for Walmart (from eight to 21) and eleven for King Soopers/City Market. Kroger stores have now experienced 25 outbreaks since the start of the pandemic.

Here's the updated list of the top ten, with outbreak dates, county locations, current case totals and status (active or resolved):
