New Rockies City Connect Uniforms Pay Homage to Mountains, Sunsets

Does the purple look rock, or not?

The Colorado Rockies have new City Connect uniforms, replacing the previous green rendition that mimicked Colorado’s license plates with a color-infused Rocky Mountain jersey.

The base colors of the jersey are baby blue and purple, with the team explaining that the color palette is also meant to evoke Colorado’s gorgeous sunsets with yellow, orange and red accent colors. Both the hats and the jersey include a logo in the shape of a mountain with a baseball flying over the peak.

The new Rockies uniforms are part of the City Connect series in partnership with Nike designed to showcase the bond between each MLB team and their home cities. The Rockies are the fourth team in the league to launch a City Connect 2.0 uniform.

“With the second iteration of City Connect, we wanted something that was clearly independent from our first release,” Rockies Vice President of Community & Retail Operations Jim Kellogg said in an announcement about the jerseys. “Whether you’re a Colorado native or just visiting, the best days in Colorado are spent outside. From sunrise to sunset, Colorado’s natural beauty is reflected in these uniforms.”

The numbers and arm patch on the jersey have yellow backgrounds, using a ripstop pattern that looks like a grid of dots connected by thin lines. According to the team’s website, the ripstop pattern is meant to be an homage to ski and snowboarding gear.

“Ripstop fabric boasts the reputation of not only being unfazed by the harsh conditions of the slopes but also malleable for the changing landscape experienced on the mountains,” the team says. “The pattern on the jersey is a reminder to persevere when times get tough, while remaining flexible to take advantage of any opportunity.”

The jerseys are also the first of the City Connect collection to be pullovers instead of buttoning up the front. The Rockies say the pullover design is an homage to youth baseball jerseys.

Though most of the jersey design serves as a tribute to the state of Colorado rather than the city of Denver, the caps are lined with the City of Denver flag. People won’t see that detail on the field, but the Rockies say the team wanted a way to keep Denver on their minds.

And, of course, no Denver-based team can release a uniform without mentioning the city sits at a mile-high elevation. In the Rockies case, there is a little tag on the side of the jersey reminding people that in Denver, baseball is played at an altitude of 5,280 feet.

“It’s time for the dawn of a new day, punctuated with rays of the triumphs of our past,” the team says.

It’s unclear exactly what those triumphs are considering the team has still never won a championship or its own division, but perhaps the Rockies just want to remind people that it used to be able to make the playoffs.

Response to the jerseys online was mixed, with some people saying they loved the concept and others pointing out that the colors look sort of like the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, which has been somewhat of a rival to the Denver Nuggets in recent years.

One comment by Tyler Key on X suggested that the jerseys are reminiscent of retro Taco Bells, which we have no problems with at all. Many people seemed to especially appreciate the hats.

People will have the chance to judge for themselves in person for the first time on Friday, April 18, when the Rockies don the new jerseys for the first time. After that, the team will wear the new City Connect jerseys for every Friday home game for the remainder of the season.
