Southwest Airlines just made another announcement that could change the Southwest customer experience just as radically as its announcement last July that the airline would no longer use an open-call seating system and instead move to a more traditional seat-assignment mode. Southwest is now going to charge for bags, too.

In response, a recent article on CNBC went so far as to claim that "Southwest Airlines as we know it is over." In fact, it's sounding a lot like other low-cost carriers, even as Frontier tries to raise its image.

And in their comments on the Westword Facebook post comparing Southwest with Frontier, its closed competitor at Denver International Airport, some readers suggest the changes just won't fly. Says Andrew:
Southwest may be headed that way, but there's a long way to go before then. Frontier is the absolute worst.
Adds Michael:
Frontier is a horrible, terrible miserable company. I don't know why anyone even uses them. Southwest has always been reliable in spite of its major breakdown two years ago.
Recalls Murin:
It's hard to remember at this point, but there was a time when Frontier was a pretty decent airline to fly. They gave you cookies.
Counters Ian:
Frontier works perfectly well for domestic travel (and when you don’t need customer service assistance).
Comments Michael:
What a ridiculous premise, followed by an analysis that does not include on-time performance, involuntary bumping and cancellations. Just your typically vapid Westword article looking for clicks. Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country, et. al. are the Greyhounds of the skies. Southwest will continue to excel at customer service even with the changes.
Notes Jerry:
For many of us frequent flyers on Southwest, these changes won’t affect us. The infrequent flyer without the Southwest credit card is the one who will pay.
Responds John:
The enshitification of Southwest didn't take long...less than a year after Elliott Investment Management got involved. Without open seating and free checked bags, there's no reason to fly Southwest anymore. Shame.
Concludes Cheryl:
The worst airline is the one you’re on.
