Adam Schefter Amazed to Learn That John Elway Hasn't Spoken to Bo Nix

John Elway is a fan of Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix, but the NFL legend says the two still haven't met or spoken.

In an extended ESPN interview with NFL reporter (and former Denver Post writer) Adam Schefter, Elway was still very high on the franchise where he won two Super Bowls as a quarterback and another as a general manager. The Hall-of-Famer praised the Broncos' evolution as a team this season, from Nix and head coach Sean Payton to the improved running game and "tremendous defense."

After making sure that "a lot of the credit goes to Sean" for "putting Nix in good situations," Elway threw in some high hopes for the rookie, saying the "sky's the limit for him."

"Bo's got all of the tools. And I think in today's game, even though you can get by without the movement, it sure is an added bonus to be able to move around and extend plays, like Bo's been able to do," he added.

But although Elway's enjoyed watching Nix extend plays and improve as a thrower this season, he hasn't met or even talked to the rookie since the NFL draft in April. According to Elway, he's "enjoyed the good life" and has traveled a lot since retiring from the Broncos' front office in 2022.

Schefter expressed surprise that Elway hadn't reached out to the rookie and that Nix hadn't sought out the legendary Broncos QB, either — but Elway didn't seem bothered. NFL players, especially quarterbacks, tend to be "tugged" around by various team officials and media responsibilities in their first year, he noted.

"I look forward to meeting him, but like I said, it's probably more my fault than anything else," Elway said.

Schefter and Elway also discussed how NFL rookies handle social media in today's environment, the Hall of Fame candidacy of former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, Elway's ten grandchildren, and his ongoing bout with Dupuytren's contracture, a chronic condition most common among men in their fifties that causes collagen to build up in the palm of the hand, resulting in fingers being pulled toward the wrist.

After Elway signed off, Schefter returned to the Nix issue, saying he  found it "amazing" that the Bronco's first-round quarterback still hasn't met the franchise's greatest to play the position.

"That is incredible to me that John Elway, who has meant so much to that franchise, has never met or spoken with Bo Nix," Schefter said.

Is that a seasoned sports insider reading between the lines? A generational disconnect between phone-call-loving Baby Boomers and members of Gen Z, who'd rather run a mile than make a cold call?

Or maybe Elway has just been traveling a lot this year.
