In the heart of northwest Denver, Sloan’s Lake is more than just a scenic body of water. It’s a beloved gathering place, a recreational haven and a cultural cornerstone for the surrounding communities. But today, Sloan’s Lake is at a turning point. With thoughtful investment, we have a powerful opportunity to restore not just a natural resource, but a vital piece of our city’s public life.

That’s why GreenLatinos Colorado is calling on the City of Denver, Mayor Mike Johnston and Denver City Council to include environmental and aquatic health improvements for Sloan’s Lake in the upcoming Vibrant Denver Bond.

Let’s be clear - It’s a necessity.

For years, Sloan’s Lake has experienced environmental challenges. The lake is now low, and hotter summers induced by climate change lead to stagnation. Recurring fish kills and declining water quality have impacted the lake’s health and its role as a space for recreation, reflection and connection. These are not just environmental concerns — they affect public well-being, access to nature and neighborhood vitality. But this isn’t just a story of decline — it’s a story of potential.

Repairing Sloan’s Lake will require regional cooperation. Multiple jurisdictions, including city departments, surrounding municipalities and water management authorities must work together to improve water quality, update infrastructure and enhance ecosystem health. GreenLatinos Colorado has proudly supported the leadership of the Sloan’s Lake Park Foundation, which has united stakeholders in a growing alliance committed to long-term restoration. Together, we are working to design a shared vision to protect and preserve the lake for future generations.

As Denver takes important steps — supported by federal funding — to improve the South Platte River, it’s vital that we also recognize the interconnectedness of our waterways. Sloan’s Lake is part of this larger system. The work done here directly contributes to regional water health.

GreenLatinos Colorado and our partners have already advanced legal protections and launched projects that strengthen our shared green infrastructure across the watershed.

Denver now has a chance to lead. By including Sloan’s Lake in the Vibrant Denver Bond, the city can set a strong example of environmental leadership and regional coordination. This investment would not only accelerate local restoration, it would signal that Denver is committed to collaborative, equitable, and future-focused solutions.

We urge Mayor Johnston and Denver City Council to rise to the occasion. Show that environmental stewardship, community well-being and intergovernmental partnership go hand in hand. Show that Denver is ready to lead with vision and purpose. And show that Sloan’s Lake — and the people who care about it — are essential to our city's future.

GreenLatinos Colorado stands with community leaders, environmental advocates, and residents across the region who believe in a cleaner, healthier, more connected Denver. Let’s make that vision a reality — together.

Now is the time. Include Sloan’s Lake in the Vibrant Denver Bond. With regional cooperation and bold leadership, we can protect what matters most.
