Addressed to "Fellow Conservative," the fundraising email kicks off with "Let's talk about the latest hit piece making its rounds in the media." But the email wasn't referencing our story about her oldest son getting charged with misdemeanor child abuse. Boebert was referring to a small amount of media coverage last month about her annual financial disclosure report, which is required of members of Congress.
On June 17, CPR News reporter Caitlyn Kim posted on X saying, "This is a first for me. CO Rep. Lauren Boebert's financial disclosure for 2024 discloses nothing. No book royalties (it was in her last disclosure), no bank accounts, no home mortgage."
A story in The Independent followed, questioning why Boebert might have filed a blank disclosure form. Then a small smattering of news sites like Alternet, Raw Story and The List published their own pieces, largely quoting the "This is a first for me" from Kim's X post. This is a first for me. CO Rep. This isn't the first time Boebert's finances have come under scrutiny. In late 2022, an online social media rumor spread that read, "Lauren Boebert has a net worth of over $12 million. Her previous work experience was as an Assistant Manager at a McDonald's. Where did she get all this money?"
That notion was quickly debunked in early 2023 by news operations, including USA Today and Reuters. By June 2023, the narrative had changed, with a Raw Story headline that read "Lauren Boebert’s financial filing suggests she is almost broke."
Last month, the first line of The Independent's story about Boebert's 2024 financial disclosure report offered this: "Lauren Boebert has raised eyebrows after filing an annual financial disclosure that disclosed...nothing."
But is that really shocking? The form asks elected officials to list assets, transactions, earned income, liabilities, positions, agreements, travel payments and reimbursements, and payments to charity in lieu of honoraria. For 2024, all of those Boebert entries are listed as "None disclosed." There are thresholds for the minimums of what elected officials must report — for example, if you don't have more than $5,000 in your checking accounts, no worries.
For her 2023 financial disclosure report, Boebert noted income of between $15,001 and $50,000 from book royalties, along with a checking account, and multiple entries for assets owned by her former husband, Jayson, whom she divorced in October 2023. The 2024 disclosure, of course, includes none of Jayson's assets — and no assets at all.
Boebert's office assured Westword that the basically-blank 2024 financial disclosure form was accurate, without offering specifics about further royalties from her 2022 book, My American Life.
In a statement to Westword, Boebert contrasted herself with members of Congress who enrich themselves while also repeating some of her hits, like blaming former president Joe Biden and "Denver politicians" for her economic woes.
"As anyone can see from my financial disclosure report, I'm not one of those members and it's important for my constituents to know that," she says. "I'm not going to be shamed by cheap shots from journalists and progressives who don't have a clue what me and my family have been through."
Boebert continues, "We weren't immune to the terrible economic policies of the Biden Administration or the Denver politicians who have made Colorado one of the most expensive states to live in; starting my life over in 2024 as a single mom of four boys plus a grandson did not come with any handouts, discounts or gift cards."
Bryan Metzger, senior politics reporter at Business Insider, currently noted that "with the caveat that she makes $174,000 per year and doesn't have to disclose the value of any personal residence [Boebert is a renter], Boebert is likely one of the poorest members of Congress."
Maybe that's why Boebert's Monday morning epistle against a story about her blank financial disclosure report was actually a fundraising email...
