It's rare to see a Cybertruck in Colorado...but one rented in the state recently showed up in Las Vegas, to deadly consequences.

A Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas early on Wednesday, January 1. Seven people were injured in the explosion, and the driver was found dead inside the vehicle from a gunshot wound. The driver was identified as an active member of the military based in Colorado Springs, who rented the Cybertruck through Turo in Colorado before driving it to Las Vegas.

The rented vehicle is one of relatively few in the state. As Westword reported earlier, Tesla's electric pickup truck has developed a divisive reputation since it hit the scene one year ago, from safety and software issues leading to five separate recalls issued for the vehicles to viral trunk finger-crushing incidents and aesthetic complaints about the bizarre futuristic design.

There are 413 Cybertrucks currently registered across Colorado, according to the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Only nine of Colorado's 64 counties have more than ten Cybertrucks registered. Over two dozen others have ten or fewer: Alamosa, Broomfield, Chaffee, Clear Creek, Delta, Eagle, Elbert, Fremont, Garfield, Gilpin, Grand, Gunnison, Huerfano, La Plata, Lake, Lincoln, Mesa, Park, Pitkin, Pueblo, Rio Grande, Routt, San Miguel, Summit and Teller.

In November, Westword ranked the state's counties by number of Cybertrucks based on DMV data from October 31, including analyses of each county's total vehicles registered from the latest annual report by the Colorado Department of Revenue.
