"Ask a Mexican," Gustavo Arellano, May 6, 2010
Gustavo, I'll boycott your column instead. Kudos to Arizona for passing a mostly good law.

What you are writing is a lie. No one is stopped in this country without probable cause, a reason to be stopped. Get a clue. You all know better; it's not that hard to understand. But, wait: I forgot you all live in a parallel universe.
As Americans, we cannot go into another country without proper ID to enter that country. The same should be expected of people from Mexico. That is the law in a sovereign country, and the U.S. is that. Wise up!

"Bad News Bill," Melanie Asmar, April 29
Thank you! Guys like this are the ones who make the dating scene so much more difficult for everyone. They make guys look bad, and make women far more defensive when making dating choices — understandably so, by the way. And for those who were trying to defend his actions in any way, shame on you. Bill Sullivan is a grown man who needs to grow up and take some responsibility for his actions. Giving a narcissist any way out is only encouraging him to keep committing the same actions over and over again. It seems pretty obvious from the large number of people listed in the article (and the larger number alluded to) that this is not a "bunch of women who conspired to do harm to Bill Sullivan." Rather, it is pretty self-evident that this is a person who has hurt far more than the average number of people in his life and is now being called out publicly on those decisions.
Nor is it "being a smart businessman" to neglect debts, get other people's credit jacked up and live a lifestyle that you can't possibly afford. That is what is commonly known as "being a dumbass businessman who will probably end up back in prison again."

Your article "Bad News Bill" was excellent. "Bad" boys seem to get the good ladies. Several years ago, I read Women Who Love Too Much, by Robin Norwood; it was not about sex, but why women choose men who are dysfunctional and abusive (emotionally and physically). The book also said that these women have self-esteem issues and are drawn to men who do drugs or alcohol, and are used to giving 70 percent in a relationship; nothing is too much trouble for your man. So it seems like women still like the excitement of trying to save a "bad" boy. Meanwhile, good guys finish last.
My favorite book title is Men Who Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them. No real man would ask a woman to buy him a car. Any woman who buys a man a Mercedes or high-end motorcycles has an elevator that does not go to the top floor.

"Gassing Up," Robin Chotzinoff, May 6
Nice to see Robin's byline back at Westword. Nicely written and evocative, even if it's not a restaurant review. Maybe the whole idea of a restaurant critic is dead after all, and we just need more people willing and able to write well.

This restaurant deserves a review, and instead it got a self-indulgent, overwritten, boring write-up that sounds like an Expository Writing 101 essay. I wish Westword would redo its restaurant review page. Jason Sheehan leaving was a good thing; now it needs to liven up the review page with less purple prose and more good information along with some real criticism.

Editor's note: Never fear; Westword is still on the hunt for a real restaurant reviewer.
