Look Inside: Largest Private Residence in Vail Valley Set for Auction

Designed by architect Charles Sink, this home could also pass as a castle...if castles had indoor pools, purple rooms and a shuttle to ski resorts.

A 20,000-square-foot estate in the Vail Valley, specifically Beaver Creek, is scheduled to hit the auction block this spring.

Located in the gated mountain community at Beaver Creek Resort, the home at 181 South Fairway Drive is the largest private residence in the Vail and Beaver Creek ski communities, according to LIV Sotheby’s International Realty. It was originally listed for $25 million in January.

"With over 20,000 square feet and one of the largest homesites in Beaver Creek, this estate presents a rare chance to redefine luxury living in one of the most exclusive locations in the Vail Valley,” Malia Cox Nobrega of LIV Sotheby’s said in an announcement about the auction. "A true masterpiece waiting for its next visionary owner."

The home was built in 1985 and designed by architect Charles "Chuck" Sink. Considered one of the greatest mid-century modern architects to work in Denver, Sink is credited with designing the now-demolished McNichols Sports Arena in Denver and One Cheesman Place, a highrise on the east side of Cheesman Park.

The Vail home Sink designed may be more aptly described as a castle, with a stone exterior and stone wine salon, according to the auction announcement. But this castle is loaded with modern flair, including a purple room, commercial kitchen and indoor pool and spa complete with a sauna.

The primary suite alone is 3,000 square feet, with two lounge areas and a private staircase to the pool. Amenities and materials include Brazilian Cherry wood, marble tile, an outdoor kitchenette and living spaces, and a gazebo.

Beaver Creek Resort offers 167 ski trails and is close to Vail Resort, which offers even more access to skiing. The Fairway Drive property is extremely private but not isolated, with 24-hour complimentary transportation around the resort offered to Beaver Creek Resort residents.

Bidding on the property begins April 9 through Sotheby's Concierge Auctions and ends April 16; starting bids are expected between $4 million and $8 million.
