Shawn Merriman, aka the Mormon Madoff, pleaded guilty to mail fraud in December 2009, earning a twelve-year sentence for Ponzi scheming that allowed him to amass an amazing collection of classic cars and more.

This Saturday, Merriman's playthings go on the block. The photos of items up for bid -- many of them on-view below -- are eye-popping and, for his victims, infuriating.

The auction takes place at 11 a.m. under the auspices of the U.S. Marshals service and Dickensheet.com, whose translucent logo can be seen on the images below. As you'll see, wheels were Merriman's thing, with vehicles ranging from vintage rides to contemporary sports cars, motorcycles and even a pedal car painted to look like a police cruiser; bet that one's less amusing to him now than it used to be. On the final page, find a Dickensheet video of a real prize -- a 1930 Lincoln Phaeton -- as well as the U.S. Marshals service release with more details about the auction and a Dickensheet inventory of what's available.

The list is proof that crime can pay -- at least for a while.

U.S. Marshals Service release:

DENVER, Colorado -- The U.S. Marshals Service will conduct a public auction on January 29th, 2011, pursuant to the Court ordered forfeiture and sale of assets accumulated by Shawn Merriman.

Merriman was convicted of Mail Fraud in U.S. District Court and sentenced to serve 151 months in federal prison and pay over $20 million in restitution for his illegal investment scheme that bilked over $37 million dollars from unsuspecting investors. Merriman used some of the money to buy a wide range of items that were ultimately seized by the Postal Inspection Service and the U.S. Marshals Service.

All of the forfeited items are to be sold at public auction at 11:00am on Saturday, January 29th, 2011 at Dickensheets & Associates, 1501 W. Wesley Avenue, Denver, CO, 303-934-8322. The online portion of the auction will begin at 12 noon. A preview of the items to be sold is set for Friday, January 28th, 2011 from 9:00am - 5:00pm. The items that are being auctioned were forfeited to the government in the related civil forfeiture case.

Items to be sold and auction requirements may be viewed at: www.dickensheet.com
