Dear Stoner: I’ll be taking a ski trip through Colorado soon. Hitting up Aspen, Breck, Winter Park and a couple others. Where are all of the Rocky Mountains’ famous smoke shacks, so I can puff one and get back on the hill?
Stringer
Dear Stringer: Most of those smoke shacks you’ve heard about were destroyed in the late 2010s by forest rangers and ski resorts, and riders have moved on to vape pens and edibles. New smoke shacks in Colorado usually don’t last very long, and the locations of those that do are kept secret for good reason. I’ve heard that Big Sky in Montana is more chill about smoke shacks than Colorado resorts, but they’re still out here.

Leo’s Shack in Breckenridge was a famous smoke shack before being torn down by forest authorities in the mid 2010s.

Winter Park is notorious for having smoke shacks and shelters pop up during snow season, and there are a few dotted around Breckenridge. (I’m too poor to have ever skied Aspen.) I’m not going to leak any locations, but nestle up to a bar in Breck or Winter Park and buy a local a few beers, and you’ll probably get some good leads. Be prepared to track your steps, though, because you’ll never find one unless you’re willing to venture into the trees.
