Dear Stoner: Why do my dabs taste like burnt popcorn? For the last month, all of my live resin and wax has tasted like the bottom of a movie theater bag, even when I keep the temperature relatively low.

Dear Sleve: Are you buying your hash from the same dispensary, dealer or extractor? This sounds like a production issue during the growing or extraction process. And if I had to put my money on it, I’d bet it was something used in the cultivation stage that was compounded during extraction. This is a common cause of contaminants and impurities in hash, from pesticides to nutrients.

A burnt popcorn flavor in hash usually involves sulfur, a common cannabis-growing nutrient.

Most of the explanations I’ve heard regarding burnt popcorn flavor in hash involve sulfur used in the growing process. A common nutrient for cannabis, sulfur adds a harsh flavor to hits if too much is added to the plant or it’s not properly flushed before harvest. I’ve heard that extracting from heavily seeded cannabis can lead to a burnt popcorn flavor, as well. No matter the cause, I’d find the common denominator – and a new hash plug.
