Wow! Never thought we’d live to see this day. Seriously. Sure, we’ve all sensed that this moment would come sooner or later. After all, the Broncos just pulled off one of the biggest choke jobs in recent memory and, yes, this is the third consecutive season the team has missed the playoffs.
Still, we have to admit that we’re a little shocked, as we try to process the news that Mike Shanahan and the Broncos have agreed to “part ways,” as owner Pat Bowlen put it in a statement just issued on the team’s site. We don’t know exactly how things went down, whether Bowlen took points in Dave Krieger’s column to heart yesterday or whether the Mastermind fell on the sword. But however you slice it, his exodus marks an end of an era.
There’s a press conference slated for 11 a.m. tomorrow morning at Dove Valley, after which Shanahan, who coached the team for fourteen seasons, will reportedly address the media. We’ll obviously have more thoughts as things progress. In the meantime, though, we repeat: wow! — Dave Herrera
